Women in India have historically played a central yet often underacknowledged role in shaping the country’s agrarian, industrial, and service economies, reflecting the intersections of gender, literature, and culture in the Indian context. Within agriculture, women constitute the backbone of the workforce, contributing to diverse operations ranging from sowing, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, and threshing to post-harvest processing and seed preservation. Their work extends beyond the visible tasks in fields; they are also custodians of indigenous knowledge systems, such as seed selection, soil fertility management, and crop rotation, which have been transmitted orally across generations. Despite these contributions, cultural narratives and institutional frameworks frequently frame men as the “farmers,” relegating women to a subordinate status as helpers or family laborers.
