Access to resources and control over resources are central to the study of gender, literature, and culture in India, as they shape not only the material conditions of life but also the symbolic power structures embedded in society. Resources here can be understood in multiple dimensions—economic, social, cultural, and intellectual. Access to resources determines opportunities, mobility, and empowerment, while control over resources defines who has the ultimate authority to use, distribute, and benefit from them. In the Indian context, these issues are deeply entangled with the historical realities of patriarchy, caste, class, and religion, as well as with the evolving discourses of modernity, nationalism, and globalization. Literature and culture provide a critical lens to understand how access and control over resources have been contested, negotiated, and represented across time. Gender plays a decisive role in determining access to and control over resources in India. Historically, patriarchal structures have limited women’s rights to land, property, education, and decision-making. The Hindu joint family system, for instance, restricted women’s inheritance rights for centuries, confining them to dependence on male relatives. Even after the Hindu Succession Act of 1956 and its later amendments, women often face cultural and familial resistance in claiming property. Access does not automatically translate into control; even if land is registered in a woman’s name, male members frequently exercise actual control over its use. This distinction is vital in understanding gender inequality, as legal reforms alone cannot dismantle cultural norms that dictate gender roles.
