4. Discuss the various types of motives. Motives are the internal forces that encourage individuals to act in a particular way to satisfy their needs and achieve their goals. In Organizational Behaviour, motives play an important role because they influence employee performance, job satisfaction, productivity, and commitment. Every individual has different motives, and these motives may change according to circumstances, personal experiences, and organizational conditions. Primary motives are basic biological needs that are essential for survival. These include hunger, thirst, sleep, rest, and the need to avoid pain. Although these motives are mainly physical, organizations should ensure proper working conditions, reasonable working hours, and adequate rest breaks so that employees can perform efficiently. General motives are not directly linked to biological needs but are found in almost every individual. These include curiosity, activity, affection, manipulation, and the desire for exploration. Employees with strong curiosity often enjoy learning new skills and accepting challenging tasks. Organizations can use training and development programmes to satisfy such motives. Secondary motives are learned through experience and social interaction. These motives are very important in the workplace because they influence employee behaviour. One of the most common secondary motives is the need for achievement. Employees with this motive prefer challenging work, set high standards, and seek success through personal effort. The need for power is another important secondary motive. Such employees like to influence others, make decisions, and take responsibility. If properly guided, they often become successful leaders and managers. However, misuse of power can create conflicts within the organization. The need for affiliation refers to the desire to develop friendly relationships and be accepted by others. Employees with a strong affiliation motive enjoy teamwork, cooperation, and good interpersonal relationships. Organizations encourage this motive through team-building activities and supportive work environments. Security motive is the desire for stability and protection from uncertainty. Employees seek job security, fair salaries, health benefits, and safe working conditions. Organizations that provide these benefits usually experience lower employee turnover and higher loyalty. Status and recognition motives encourage employees to earn respect, appreciation, promotions, and rewards. Recognition through awards, appreciation letters, and promotions motivates employees to improve their performance and remain committed to organizational goals. Financial motives include salary, incentives, bonuses, profit sharing, and other monetary benefits.
