Women play a crucial yet often underrecognized role in the fisheries sector across the world, contributing significantly to production, processing, and marketing activities. Their involvement spans from small-scale subsistence fishing to large-scale commercial aquaculture, and their contributions extend beyond capture fisheries into post-harvest activities, trade, and value chain management. Despite their pivotal role, women’s contributions are frequently invisible in national statistics and policy frameworks, which hinders their access to resources, decision-making platforms, and benefits from development initiatives. The status of women in fisheries varies across regions and countries, influenced by socio-cultural norms, economic opportunities, legal frameworks, and access to education and technology. In many Asian countries, women are actively engaged in fisheries-related activities, though they are often concentrated in post-harvest processing rather than capture fishing. In India, women account for a large proportion of the workforce in fish processing plants, drying, and marketing activities. They are commonly seen at landing centers sorting and grading fish, an essential step in maintaining quality. In coastal states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu, women are also involved in traditional fish vending, where they take fish to local markets and sell them directly to consumers, playing a vital role in the local fish economy. However, they have limited control over income from capture fishing, as boats and nets are mostly owned and operated by men. Women in India also face challenges related to occupational health, lack of cold storage facilities, and restricted access to credit and formal markets.
