Urban development in India has emerged as a critical issue in the twenty-first century due to the unprecedented pace of urbanization, the pressure on urban infrastructure, and the rising aspirations of a growing population. Cities have become engines of economic growth, contributing significantly to national GDP, industrial productivity, and innovation. However, the rapid growth of urban centers has also generated challenges such as slums, environmental degradation, inadequate housing, traffic congestion, and weak service delivery, making urban development a multidimensional issue that requires urgent policy attention. One of the foremost reasons urban development is now an important issue is the pressure of migration. Millions migrate to cities in search of jobs, better education, and improved healthcare facilities. This sudden influx creates enormous demand for housing, water supply, electricity, sanitation, and transport. The inability of cities to match these needs has led to the proliferation of slums and informal settlements, where living conditions are substandard. Thus, housing and slum rehabilitation become vital aspects of urban development that demand greater attention. The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) has been a step forward, but the gap between the availability of affordable housing and its demand remains wide, highlighting the need for stronger interventions in this sector. Another pressing issue in urban development is infrastructure. Roads, bridges, and transport systems in many Indian cities are inadequate for the expanding urban population. Congestion and traffic jams not only waste time and reduce productivity but also contribute heavily to air pollution. Public transport systems like metros, buses, and suburban rail require expansion and modernization to ensure affordable and sustainable mobility.
