# Impact of the Charter Act of 1833 The Charter Act of 1833 was one of the most important constitutional measures introduced by the British Parliament for the administration of India. It marked a significant stage in the transformation of the East India Company from a commercial organisation into an administrative agency of the British government. Passed during the period of Governor-General William Bentinck, the Act reflected the influence of liberal and utilitarian ideas in Britain and the changing nature of British rule in India. It attempted to centralise administration, promote legislative uniformity, encourage free trade and reorganise the functioning of the Company. Its impact was therefore political, administrative, economic, legal and educational. One of the most significant consequences of the Charter Act of 1833 was the further centralisation of British administration in India. The Act transformed the Governor-General of Bengal into the Governor-General of India. William Bentinck became the first Governor-General of India. His authority was extended over the presidencies of Bengal, Bombay and Madras in matters of legislation and general administration. The Act thus strengthened the central government at Calcutta and reduced the independent legislative authority of the provincial governments. Bombay and Madras could no longer enact laws on important matters without the approval of the central authority. This represented a major movement towards administrative unity and uniformity.
