# Was the 18th Century in India a ‘Dark Age’? Comment. The description of the eighteenth century in India as a “dark age” is a highly debated issue among historians. Earlier colonial historians often portrayed the eighteenth century as a period of political decline, social disorder, economic stagnation and cultural decay that followed the decline of the Mughal Empire. According to this interpretation, the weakening of central authority after the death of Aurangzeb in 1707 created political chaos and prepared the ground for British expansion. However, modern historians have challenged this simplistic interpretation. The eighteenth century was certainly a period of political instability and warfare, but it was also an age of regional state formation, economic change, commercial expansion and cultural development. Therefore, it would be misleading to describe the entire century as a “dark age.” The decline of the Mughal Empire was one of the most important political developments of the eighteenth century. After Aurangzeb's death, Mughal emperors became increasingly weak, while powerful nobles and provincial governors asserted their independence. Provinces such as Bengal, Awadh and Hyderabad developed considerable autonomy. The Marathas expanded their influence over large parts of India, while the Sikhs, Jats and Rajputs also established or strengthened regional political power. The Mughal emperor continued to possess symbolic authority, but effective political power became increasingly decentralized. This political fragmentation undoubtedly produced instability. Frequent wars between regional powers disrupted agricultural production in some areas. The invasions of Nadir Shah in 1739 and Ahmad Shah Abdali in the eighteenth century exposed the weakness of the Mughal state. Nadir Shah's invasion and the sack of Delhi caused enormous destruction and demonstrated the declining military and administrative strength of the empire.
