Urban poverty refers to the set of economic and social difficulties that are found in industrialized cities and that are the result of a combination of processes such as: the establishment of comfortable living standards, the increase of individualism, processes of social fragmentation, and the dualization of the labor market, which translates into social dualization. 

Urban poverty is a form of poverty that is particularly visible in megacities, characterised by poor living circumstances and income, as well as a lack of essential utilities for a decent standard of life. Urban poverty in India is unique, particularly in the way that it follows certain patterns of growth. Though the proportion of urban poor has reportedly declined over the past decades, the numbers keep adding up.

Causes and consequences of urban poverty are-

1. Urban poor groups use few non-renewable resources. Most of the houses in which poor urban people live (and often build for themselves) make widespread use of recycled or reclaimed materials, and little use of cement and other materials with a high-energy input.
