The Naqshbandi silsilah was an important Sufi order that played a significant role in the religious, social and political history of medieval India. It originated in Central Asia and was named after Baha-ud-Din Naqshband Bukhari (1318–1389), a prominent Sufi saint of the fourteenth century. The order developed in the region of Central Asia and later spread to India during the Mughal period. Unlike some other Sufi orders, the Naqshbandis placed considerable emphasis on adherence to Islamic law, or Sharia, and maintained a relatively orthodox approach to religious practices. The Naqshbandi order entered India during the reign of Akbar. Khwaja Baqi Billah, a Central Asian Sufi who came to India in the late sixteenth century, is generally regarded as the founder of the Naqshbandi order in India.
