Social security programmes in the context of rural development have played a very important role in ensuring economic stability, social protection, and a basic standard of living for vulnerable populations. Rural societies in India have historically been affected by poverty, unemployment, underemployment, illiteracy, malnutrition, poor healthcare access, and lack of social protection in times of old age, disability, or death of earning members. Social security initiatives are meant to address these vulnerabilities and create a safety net for people who are unable to sustain themselves due to socio-economic and demographic disadvantages. In the rural context, these programmes not only provide welfare support but also work as tools of empowerment, equity, and inclusion. The broader goal of rural development is not only about economic growth but also about ensuring that no section of the population is left behind in the development process. Social security schemes therefore act as essential rural development programmes designed to meet immediate needs and also contribute to long-term socio-economic stability.
