The Indian government has recognized climate change as one of the most pressing challenges of the 21st century. Being one of the largest developing nations and a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions, India has formulated various policies and implemented numerous measures to combat climate change while maintaining its developmental goals. These measures cover multiple sectors such as energy, industry, agriculture, transportation, forestry, and urban development, focusing on sustainable development and reducing carbon emissions. One of the key frameworks in India’s climate action strategy is the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC), launched in 2008. The NAPCC outlines eight core national missions aimed at promoting sustainable development and addressing climate change. These missions guide various sectors toward climate resilience and energy efficiency. The eight missions are the National Solar Mission, the National Mission for Enhanced Energy Efficiency, the National Mission on Sustainable Habitat, the National Water Mission, the National Mission for Sustaining the Himalayan Ecosystem, the National Mission for a Green India, the National Mission on Sustainable Agriculture, and the National Mission on Strategic Knowledge for Climate Change. The National Solar Mission, in particular, reflects India’s commitment to renewable energy development. It targets substantial growth in solar energy capacity, promoting solar photovoltaic power generation and solar thermal energy applications. India has set ambitious targets under this mission, aiming for 100 GW of solar power by 2022, which has now been further expanded under the broader renewable energy targets of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.
