Probability sampling uses some form of random selection. In a random selection method, the analyst must set up some process or procedure that assures that the different units in the sample population have equal probabilities of being chosen. In contrast, nonprobability sampling is conducted when a representative sample cannot be collected. The following are short descriptions of the various probability sampling methods.
• Simple Random Sampling. This technique requires that each sample from the population has an equal chance of selection. The user first defines the population and then randomly selects from the entire population. There is a certain amount of uncertainty, or variability, associated with the estimates made for the larger population based on the smaller sample. This type of sampling is simple to apply and the analysis of data is reasonably easy; however, the sample may not be representative of the whole.
• Stratified Random Sampling. In this technique, the population is first divided into nonoverlapping sub-populations called strata.
