The relationship between population and agriculture has been a central concern of social thinkers, economists and demographers for centuries. As food production forms the material basis of human survival, any change in population size directly affects agricultural demand, land use, and resource management. Various thinkers have examined whether agricultural production can keep pace with population growth and how technological, social and policy interventions influence this balance. Thomas Robert Malthus was one of the earliest and most influential thinkers to systematically analyze the relationship between population and agriculture. In his “Essay on the Principle of Population” (1798), Malthus argued that population tends to grow in a geometric progression, while food production increases only in an arithmetic progression. According to him, this imbalance would inevitably lead to scarcity, famine, disease and conflict unless population growth was checked by preventive or positive checks. Agriculture, in his view, faced diminishing returns because land is limited and additional labor applied to the same land would produce proportionately less output. Malthus’s theory highlighted the natural limits of agricultural expansion and strongly influenced later population policies that emphasized birth control and restraint. In contrast, Ester Boserup presented an optimistic and dynamic view of the population–agriculture relationship.
