Sharps are one of the most hazardous categories of health-care waste because they can cause cuts and puncture wounds and may transmit blood-borne infections such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV. Sharps include used and unused needles, syringes with attached needles, lancets, scalpels, blades, suture needles, broken glass, disposable razors and other pointed or sharp medical instruments. Proper segregation at the point of generation is therefore an essential component of safe health-care waste management. Segregation means separating sharps from other categories of waste immediately when and where they are generated. Under the Biomedical Waste Management Rules, 2016, and applicable health-care waste management practices in India, sharps are placed in a puncture-proof, leak-proof and tamper-proof container, generally identified with the appropriate colour coding. The container should be specifically designed for sharps and should not be an ordinary plastic bag. The procedure begins at the point of use. The health-care worker should identify the sharp item immediately after completing the procedure. A used needle, blade, lancet or other sharp should never be mixed with general waste, infectious soft waste or recyclable waste. The sharp should be discarded directly into the designated sharps container kept as close as possible to the place where the procedure is performed. This practice prevents unnecessary handling and reduces the possibility of accidental injury. Needles should not be recapped, bent, broken, cut or manipulated by hand after use. Recapping is particularly dangerous because it increases the likelihood of a needle-stick injury.
