Conflict is a natural and inevitable part of any human society. In social anthropology, understanding how societies resolve conflicts is fundamental to analyzing social structure, cohesion, authority, and justice. Conflict resolution encompasses a variety of mechanisms through which disputes are managed, minimized, or settled to maintain social harmony. These mechanisms vary widely across cultures and can be formal or informal, institutional or customary, peaceful or coercive. Social anthropologists explore conflict resolution by examining kinship systems, legal structures, religious practices, political institutions, and economic arrangements. The methods of resolving conflicts in a society can be broadly categorized into negotiation, mediation, adjudication, arbitration, oath-taking, avoidance, compensation, and reconciliation practices. 1. Negotiation Negotiation is one of the most fundamental and widespread means of conflict resolution. It involves direct discussion between conflicting parties with the aim of reaching a mutually acceptable agreement. In many small-scale societies, such as tribal groups or kin-based communities, negotiation is often informal and takes place within the household, clan, or village setting. Social anthropologists such as E.E. Evans-Pritchard and Raymond Firth have shown how negotiation is deeply embedded in the norms and expectations of the group, often relying on customary law rather than written codes. Negotiation preserves social ties and is non-coercive in nature. Among the Nuer of South Sudan, for example, conflict resolution through negotiation often involves elders and family representatives. The emphasis is placed on restoring relationships rather than determining guilt or innocence. 2. Mediation Mediation involves the intervention of a neutral third party who facilitates the resolution of a dispute. Unlike adjudication, the mediator does not impose a decision but helps the disputing parties to communicate, compromise, and reach an agreement. Mediation is widely used in both traditional and modern societies. In tribal societies, the mediator is often a respected elder, religious figure, or chief. Among the Bedouins of the Middle East, sheikhs often act as mediators in disputes related to land, honor, and property. The Somali “xeer” system is another example, where customary law is administered through community elders who mediate between clans.
