People’s participation is the foundation on which Farmers Producers Organizations (FPOs) are built and sustained. An FPO is essentially a collective enterprise formed by primary producers with the objective of enhancing their income, bargaining power, and access to markets, technology, and financial services. The success of such organizations depends not merely on legal registration or financial assistance but on the active involvement of members in planning, decision-making, implementation, monitoring, and benefit-sharing processes. Participation transforms farmers from passive beneficiaries into active stakeholders and co-owners of the enterprise. One of the major significances of people’s participation in FPOs lies in strengthening collective bargaining power. Individual small and marginal farmers often lack the scale to negotiate favorable prices for inputs and outputs. Participation ensures regular supply commitments, adherence to quality standards, and trust among members, which are essential for sustaining long-term market relationships. Participation also enhances transparency and accountability within the organization. When members attend general body meetings, review financial statements, and question management decisions, it reduces the risk of mismanagement and elite capture. Democratic participation in electing board members and approving major decisions fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility.
