In the early 20th century, a more academic and systematic approach emerged through the work of scholars like Sarat Chandra Roy, often regarded as the first Indian ethnographer. His works, such as “The Mundas and Their Country” (1912) and “The Oraons of Chota Nagpur” (1915), are notable for their detailed participant observation and sympathetic understanding of tribal life.
