The study of tribes in India has been enriched by the contributions of anthropologists from colonial times to the present. Anthropology, as a discipline, has played a critical role in documenting, interpreting, and analyzing tribal societies, their culture, economy, political organization, religion, and processes of change. The contributions span ethnographic descriptions, theoretical frameworks, and policy-oriented recommendations, influencing both academic understanding and governmental approaches toward tribal communities. The earliest systematic studies of tribes in India were initiated during the British colonial period. British administrators and anthropologists, such as Herbert Risley, played a pioneering role.
