As societies modernise, women gain more rights through the democratic process. Since social stratification is less extreme in modern societies, women have been treated more equally. However due to nature of socialisation and internalisation, gender roles have not changed as much. Poverty is higher among women and children. These patterns show the power and pervasiveness of the social structure. Gender stratification has been built into our social institutions and women are trying to bring about change at the level of social structure.

In the Pre-Industrial society, food production, which is carried out through the use of human and animal labour, is the main economic activity. These societies can be subdivided according to their level of technology and their method of producing food. These sub-divisions are: (i) Hunting and Gathering, (ii) Pastoral, (iii) Horticultural, (iv) Agricultural and (v) Feudal.
