See Answer →बहुत कुछ जो इस दुनिया में हो रहा है वह ऐसा ही क्यों होता है, अन्यथा क्यों नहीं होता—इसका क्या उत्तर है? उत्तर हो अथवा न हो, पर जान पड़ता है भवितव्य ही होता है। नियति का लेख बैठा है। एक भी अक्षर उसका यहाँ से वहाँ न हो सकेगा। वह बदलता नहीं, बदलेगा नहीं। पर विधि का वह अतर्क्य लेख किस खयाल में बनाया है, उसका उसमें क्या प्रयोजन है— यह भी कभी पूछकर जानने की इच्छा की जा सकती है, या नहीं? शायद नहीं। ज्ञानी जन कह गये हैं कि परम कल्याणमय ही इस सृष्टि में अपनी परम लीला का विस्तार कर रहा है। मैं मान लेता हूँ कि ऐसा ही है। न मानूँ तो जीऊँ कैसे?
(ग) सीताराम की गुहार बाबा के कानों में तो ऐसे पड़ी जैसे कोई अंधा बंद गली में चलते-चलते दीवार से टकराकर अपना सिर फुड़ौवल कर ले। मन को पछतावा हुआ, 'हे प्रभु, तुम्हारी यह माया ऐसी है कि जन्म भर जप-तप साधन करते-करते पण मरो तब भी इससे पार पाना उस समय तक महा कठिन है जब तक कि तुम्हारी ही पूर्ण कृपा न हो। सुनता हूँ, विचारता हूँ, समझता भी हूँ, यहाँ तक कि अब तो दूसरों को विस्तार से समझा भी देता हूँ पर मौके पर यह सारा किया-धरा-चौपट हो जाता है।
(घ) मरने के समय वह सिर स्थिर था, शांत था, अडिग और निर्भय। वह सब में रम रहा है, मेरे और जल्लाद के भीतर वही है, जल्लाद की तलवार और मेरे सिर में भी वही है। सब में वही है। सब बराबर हैं। साक्षी और अटल मैं वही है। दोनों में वही है ? फिर मैंने उन दोनों के बीच में भेद क्यों किया ? पर वह तो वर्णाश्रम की बात थी। जो कुछ भी हो, अब किसी के लिए मन में कोई बुराई नहीं। सिकन्दर के लिए नहीं, मौखरिओं के लिए नहीं, किसी के लिए नहीं।
जीवन-रंगशाला का यह निर्दयी सूत्रधार किसी अगम गुप्त स्थान पर बैठा हुआ अपनी जटिल भ्रू क्रीड़ा दिखा रहा है। यह कौन जानता था कि कल अकाल होने जा रही है, अभिनव सत्य का रूप ग्रहण करने वाला है। शिखा ने इन्दु को परास्त करके अपना साम्राज्य स्थापित कर लिया था। उसकी वैज्ञानिक सेना ने प्रकृति पर आतंक जमा रखा था। सद्वृत्तियाँ मुँह छिपाये पड़ी थीं और कुवृत्तियाँ विजय-गर्व से इतलाती फिरती थीं।
