The Kingdom of Malwa emerged as an independent political entity in the early fifteenth century during the weakening of the Delhi Sultanate. Malwa was an important region of central India because of its fertile plateau, strategic location, commercial routes and proximity to the major political centres of northern and western India. The formation of an independent Malwa Sultanate was closely connected with the political instability of the Delhi Sultanate after the death of Firoz Shah Tughlaq and, particularly, with the crisis created by Timur’s invasion of Delhi in 1398. The decline of central authority enabled provincial governors and military commanders to establish independent kingdoms, and Malwa was one of the most significant examples of this process. Malwa had considerable geographical and strategic importance. The region consisted largely of a fertile plateau situated between the Vindhya ranges and the Narmada valley. It connected northern India with Gujarat and the Deccan and contained important commercial centres such as Dhar, Mandu, Ujjain and later Mandu as the principal political centre. Control over Malwa therefore provided access to important trade routes and agricultural resources. Its geographical position also enabled its rulers to intervene in the affairs of Gujarat, Rajasthan, the Deccan and northern India. These factors made Malwa an attractive province for ambitious governors seeking political independence. The weakening of the Delhi Sultanate during the later Tughlaq period created the immediate conditions for the formation of the Malwa state. Under the earlier Tughlaq rulers, the Sultanate had exercised substantial control over Malwa through provincial governors. However, the administrative system became increasingly unstable during the later fourteenth century. Provincial governors acquired greater military and financial resources, while the authority of the central government declined. The invasion of Timur in 1398 further destroyed the prestige and effective authority of the Delhi Sultanate. After this event, several provinces virtually ceased to acknowledge the authority of Delhi. Gujarat, Jaunpur, Bengal and Malwa developed into independent political formations.
