Participatory communication is a development communication approach that emphasizes the active involvement of people in identifying their problems, making decisions, planning solutions, implementing programmes, and evaluating outcomes. Unlike the traditional top-down model of communication, where information flows from experts or authorities to the public, participatory communication is based on dialogue, mutual learning, collaboration, and shared decision-making. It recognizes that communities possess valuable local knowledge, experiences, and cultural practices that should form the foundation of development initiatives. The central idea is that sustainable development cannot be achieved unless people themselves become active participants rather than passive recipients of information or aid. The concept emerged as a response to the limitations of modernization theories and diffusion models that dominated development thinking during the 1950s and 1960s.
