Heteroscedasticity is a term used in econometrics to describe a situation where the variance of the errors, or the residuals, in a regression model is not constant across all observations. In other words, it occurs when the variability of the dependent variable is not the same for all values of the independent variables. This is in contrast to homoscedasticity, where the variance of the errors is constant. Heteroscedasticity often arises in real-world data, where different levels of the explanatory variables lead to varying levels of unpredictability or noise in the dependent variable. 

In econometrics, the assumption of homoscedasticity is crucial for making valid inferences from the results of regression models. If heteroscedasticity is present, the usual Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) estimators of regression coefficients are still unbiased and consistent. However, their standard errors will no longer be reliable, which undermines the validity of hypothesis tests and confidence intervals. As a result, any statistical inferences, such as significance tests for coefficients, may be misleading, leading to incorrect conclusions about relationships between variables.

The primary consequence of heteroscedasticity is that it affects the efficiency of the estimators. While the OLS estimates of the coefficients remain unbiased, they are no longer the Best Linear Unbiased Estimators (BLUE) as they would be under homoscedasticity.
