Heteroscedasticity refers to the situation in econometric analysis where the variability of the errors or the disturbance terms in a regression model is not constant across all levels of the independent variable(s). In other words, it occurs when the spread or dispersion of the residuals (the differences between the observed and predicted values) varies as a function of the explanatory variables. This violates one of the key assumptions of classical linear regression models, which assumes homoscedasticity, i.e., constant variance of the errors.

### Consequences of Heteroscedasticity

1. Inefficiency of OLS Estimators: 
   The presence of heteroscedasticity does not make the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) estimates of the coefficients biased or inconsistent, assuming the other assumptions of the classical linear regression model hold. However, heteroscedasticity leads to inefficiency in these estimates. OLS estimates, in the presence of heteroscedasticity, are no longer the Best Linear Unbiased Estimators (BLUE), as they violate the assumption of the Gauss-Markov theorem which assumes constant error variance. As a result, the estimators become less reliable and precise, leading to larger standard errors.

2. Incorrect Inference: 
   When heteroscedasticity is present, the usual t-tests and F-tests, which are used to test the significance of regression coefficients and the overall model, become invalid. This happens because the standard errors of the coefficients estimated by OLS are biased, which can lead to incorrect conclusions about the significance of predictors in the model.
