# Liberal Feminism and the Foundations of Classical Liberal Feminist Thought Liberal feminism is one of the earliest and most influential traditions within feminist thought. It emerged from the broader philosophical tradition of liberalism, which places individual freedom, equality, reason, rights and autonomy at the centre of social and political life. Liberal feminists argue that women’s subordination is primarily a consequence of unequal laws, discriminatory institutions, restricted opportunities and social attitudes that deny women the same rights and freedoms enjoyed by men. They therefore seek to achieve gender equality through legal reform, education, political participation, economic opportunities and changes in public policy rather than through a complete transformation of the existing social and economic system. The intellectual foundations of classical liberal feminism can be traced to the Enlightenment and the rise of modern liberal political philosophy in Europe. Classical liberalism challenged hereditary privilege, absolute monarchy and legally established social inequalities. Thinkers such as John Locke emphasised natural rights, individual liberty, equality and consent. However, the liberal principle of universal individual rights was initially applied largely to men. Women were frequently excluded from citizenship, education, property ownership and political participation. Liberal feminism developed partly by exposing this contradiction between the universal claims of liberalism and the actual exclusion of women. Mary Wollstonecraft is regarded as one of the foundational thinkers of classical liberal feminism. In *A Vindication of the Rights of Woman* (1792), she challenged the belief that women were naturally inferior to men.
