Was caste an invention of colonial modernity? Discuss.

the colonial modernity thesis has been both embraced and criticized for its wide range and abstract characteristics. The discursive use of term ‘colonial modernity’, however, makes it hard to limit its definitions to either a temporal or an analytic framework. This difficulty arises in part from colonial modernity's direct link to an actual historical timeframe: the inter-war period of the 1920s and 1930s. Matsuda  comments, ‘It is hard to comprehend how colonial modernity can be seen as a temporal category, specifically referring to the period between the 1920s and 1930s, and at the same time be used as an analytical concept’ . Nonetheless, as an analytic concept, colonial modernity does help to explicate the course of both colonization and modernization in East Asia. Several attempts have been made to resolve the dual aspects of the colonial modernity thesis, for example, the Japanese portion of an international project, Modern Girl around the World, titled Modern Girls and Colonial Modernity .

The malleable quality of the colonial modernity thesis forms a major premise of this special issue. While illuminating the origins, results, evolution and future of colonial modernity in East Asia, the essays herein also celebrate its conceptual versatility rather than confining it within ______ ______ _______ _________ _________.
