The Early Neolithic in Greece spans the period between 6500-5800 BC. Based on pottery found in Thessaly , the archaeologist V. Milojcic distinguished three successive phases of the Early Neolithic: Early Pottery , Protosesklo and Presesklo.

Sites of the Early Neolithic are to be found on the shores and the hinterland of the Greek mainland and the Ionian and Aegean Islands, in lowlands and hilly regions, mainly in rivers, streams and springs. The dearth of archaeological remains of the Early Neolithic from the Cyclades is somewhat surprising as there is evidence that navigation in the Aegean and the extraction of obsidian took place in the end of the Upper Palaeolithic and in the Mesolithic Period.
