The Three Principles of the People (San Min Chu I) constituted the political philosophy developed by Sun Yat-sen, the founder of modern Chinese nationalism and the chief architect of the Chinese Revolution of 1911. These principles—Nationalism (Minzu), Democracy (Minquan), and People's Livelihood (Minsheng)—formed the ideological foundation of the Chinese Nationalist Movement and later became the guiding doctrine of the Kuomintang (KMT). They represented Sun Yat-sen's attempt to modernize China by combining elements of Western political thought with Chinese traditions and practical realities. The principles emerged during a period when China was suffering from foreign imperialism, internal rebellion, economic backwardness, and the collapse of the Qing dynasty. Sun Yat-sen formulated these principles over several decades while studying the political systems of Europe, the United States, and Japan. He believed that China required not merely the removal of the Manchu Qing dynasty but a complete transformation of its political, social, and economic structure. His philosophy sought to create a strong, united, democratic, and prosperous nation capable of resisting foreign domination and ensuring the welfare of its people. The first principle, Nationalism (Minzu), was directed against foreign imperialism and the rule of the Manchu Qing dynasty. During the nineteenth century, China had suffered repeated defeats in the Opium Wars, unequal treaties, territorial concessions, and foreign intervention. Western powers and Japan enjoyed extensive privileges in China, while the Qing government proved incapable of defending national sovereignty. Sun believed that China had become a "semi-colonial" country, divided by foreign spheres of influence and weakened by internal corruption. Initially, Sun interpreted nationalism as the overthrow of the Manchu dynasty, which he regarded as a foreign ruling house established by conquest. His revolutionary slogan called for the expulsion of the Manchus and the restoration of Chinese rule. However, after the success of the 1911 Revolution, his conception of nationalism broadened. He emphasized unity among all ethnic groups within China, including the Han, Manchus, Mongols, Tibetans, and Muslims. He advocated the idea of "Five Races Under One Union," arguing that all nationalities should cooperate in building a unified Chinese republic. Sun also opposed imperialism and sought the restoration of ____ _____ _______ _____ ________ ________ ______ _________ ______.
