The Hundred Days' Reform of 1898 was one of the most significant attempts to modernize Qing China during the late nineteenth century. It represented an ambitious effort to transform China's political, economic, educational, and military institutions in response to internal decline and growing foreign imperialist pressure. Although the reform movement lasted for only about one hundred days, from June to September 1898, it had a profound impact on the intellectual and political history of China. It exposed the deep divisions within the Qing ruling elite, encouraged the growth of reformist and revolutionary ideas, and laid the foundations for later constitutional and republican movements. The origins of the Hundred Days' Reform can be traced to the severe crises faced by China in the nineteenth century. Following the Opium Wars, unequal treaties, the Taiping Rebellion, the Sino-French War, and other internal and external challenges, the Qing Empire experienced continuous political and economic weakness. The Self-Strengthening Movement had introduced limited modernization by adopting Western military technology while preserving traditional Confucian political structures. However, these reforms failed to strengthen China sufficiently because they did not address the deeper institutional weaknesses of the Qing administration. The decisive turning point came after China's defeat in the First Sino-Japanese War (1894–95). Japan, which had successfully modernized through the Meiji Restoration, defeated China decisively, shocking Chinese intellectuals and officials.
