One of the most significant instances of viral misinformation in India was the spread of child-kidnapping rumors on WhatsApp between 2017 and 2018, which led to mob violence and several lynching incidents across states such as Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. Messages containing fabricated videos, misleading captions, and alarming warnings circulated widely, urging people to “stay alert” against supposed child traffickers. Many of these videos were either old clips from unrelated countries or staged footage misrepresented as real events in local areas. The viral nature of the rumors caused fear and panic, resulting in innocent individuals being attacked by mobs who believed they were protecting their communities.
