The Information and Library Network Centre (INFLIBNET) is one of the most significant initiatives in the development of academic library and information services in India. It was established with the objective of promoting scholarly communication, resource sharing, networking, and access to information among universities, colleges, research institutions, and academic libraries. In the modern academic library system, INFLIBNET functions as an important gateway through which students, teachers, researchers, librarians, and other members of the academic community can discover and access a wide range of scholarly information resources. INFLIBNET was initiated by the University Grants Commission (UGC) as a major programme for modernising library and information services in higher education. It was later established as an independent Inter-University Centre under the UGC. Its primary purpose is to connect academic libraries through information and communication technologies and to facilitate the sharing of bibliographic information and scholarly resources. Through networking and digital services, INFLIBNET has helped Indian academic libraries move from traditional, isolated collections towards a more interconnected and resource-sharing-oriented library system. One of the most important contributions of INFLIBNET is its role in providing access to electronic information resources. Academic libraries often face limitations in terms of financial resources, space, and the ability to subscribe individually to a large number of scholarly journals and databases.
