# Importance of Dermatoglyphics Dermatoglyphics is the scientific study of the patterns formed by the ridges on the fingers, palms, toes and soles of the feet. The term is derived from the Greek words *derma*, meaning skin, and *glyph*, meaning carving or writing. These patterns are formed during fetal development and remain relatively stable throughout an individual's life. Because of their permanence, uniqueness and hereditary basis, dermatoglyphics has become an important method in physical anthropology and biological anthropology. In Research Methods in Anthropology-II, dermatoglyphics is particularly significant because it provides a non-invasive method for studying biological variation, heredity, population relationships and certain developmental abnormalities. The epidermal ridge patterns begin to develop during the early stages of prenatal life, generally during the third and fourth months of gestation, and become well established before birth. Once formed, they normally do not change significantly during an individual's lifetime, except when the skin is deeply damaged. Growth of the body enlarges the patterns but does not fundamentally alter their basic configuration. This permanence makes dermatoglyphic characteristics useful for identification and anthropological research. Fingerprints, for example, can be recorded at different ages and compared over long periods without major changes in the basic ridge arrangement. One of the most important uses of dermatoglyphics in anthropology is the study of heredity. Dermatoglyphic traits are influenced by genetic factors, although their expression is also affected by the conditions prevailing during fetal development.
