Despite its vast demographic potential and rapid economic growth in certain sectors, the region continues to grapple with persistent human rights challenges. These issues are deeply rooted in historical legacies, social hierarchies, political instability, and economic disparities. Human rights concerns in South Asia cut across a wide spectrum, ranging from political and civil rights to economic, social, and cultural rights, making the region a critical site of both progress and struggle in the global human rights discourse. One of the principal human rights issues in South Asia relates to poverty and inequality. Despite significant strides in reducing poverty over the past decades, millions still live below the poverty line, particularly in rural areas. Access to basic rights such as food, clean water, healthcare, and education remains uneven. Children and women often bear the brunt of this deprivation, facing malnutrition, limited educational opportunities, and high maternal and infant mortality rates. The problem is compounded by weak state infrastructure and inadequate social safety nets, which undermine the fulfillment of fundamental human rights tied to economic and social well-being.
