An interrupt is an event that temporarily diverts the 8086 from its current program to a service routine. Sources include internal exceptions (e.g., divide error), the INT n instruction, the maskable hardware request INTR (typically via an 8259A PIC), and the Non-Maskable Interrupt NMI. At the end of every instruction, the 8086 samples NMI (edge-triggered) and, if IF=1, samples INTR. Priority is: NMI (highest), then internal/trap/breakpoint/overflow, then INTR. The selected interrupt is vectorized through the Interrupt Vector Table (IVT), a 1 KB table in memory starting at physical address 00000h (segment\:offset 0000:0000).
