Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have become important tools in retail consumer behavior because they enable retailers to understand customers more accurately and deliver personalized shopping experiences. Traditional customer segmentation often depends on broad characteristics such as age, gender, income, location and purchase history. AI and machine learning can analyse much larger and more complex datasets, including browsing behaviour, transaction records, search queries, social media interactions, loyalty-programme activity, product preferences and responses to promotions. This allows retailers to identify meaningful customer groups and develop marketing strategies that are better suited to individual needs and behaviours. Customer segmentation refers to the process of dividing a large customer base into smaller groups that share similar characteristics, needs or purchasing behaviours. AI can improve this process by automatically collecting and analysing data from multiple sources. For example, a retailer may combine point-of-sale data, e-commerce transactions, mobile-app activity, website browsing patterns and loyalty-card information. Machine-learning algorithms can then identify patterns that may not be visible through conventional analysis. Customers can be segmented according to purchase frequency, average order value, product preferences, brand loyalty, price sensitivity, shopping frequency and engagement with promotional campaigns.
