# Network Programming, Client-Server Communication and Sockets Network programming refers to the development of software applications that communicate and exchange data between two or more computers or devices connected through a network. It enables applications running on different systems to share information, access resources, and provide network-based services. Network programming is widely used in web applications, email systems, file transfer, remote login, database applications, distributed systems, cloud computing, and many other network services. It generally involves communication protocols, IP addresses, port numbers, sockets, and client-server architectures. The main purpose of network programming is to establish reliable or efficient communication between processes running on the same or different computers. A network application normally has a process that requests a service and another process that provides the requested service. Communication between these processes takes place according to predefined networking protocols such as TCP/IP, UDP, HTTP, FTP, and SMTP. Programming languages such as C, C++, Java, Python, and JavaScript provide libraries and APIs for developing network applications. One of the most important architectures used in network programming is the Client-Server model. In this model, two types of programs participate in communication: the client and the server. The client is the program that initiates a request for a particular service, whereas the server is the program that continuously waits for requests and provides the required service. A server usually runs on a computer connected to a network and listens for incoming connection requests on a specific IP address and port number. When a client wants to use the service, it sends a request to the server. The server receives the request, processes it, and sends an appropriate response back to the client. This communication may take place over a local area network or across the Internet.
