Maharishi Ramana, one of the most revered spiritual masters of modern India, was born as Venkataraman Iyer on December 30, 1879, in Tiruchuzhi, a small village in Tamil Nadu, India. His early life was ordinary, and he exhibited no signs of spiritual inclination during his childhood. He was an intelligent and athletic boy who enjoyed sports and had an excellent memory. However, his life took a drastic turn at the age of sixteen when he experienced a sudden and profound awakening.  

One day in 1896, Venkataraman had an intense fear of death. This fear was not caused by any physical illness but was an inner experience.
