Gandhi's analysis of communal conflicts in British India

Before the ascendancy of Gandhi in the Indian politics almost all the prominent Congress leaders including Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Hakim Ajmal Khan, Motilal Nehru, Lala Lajpat Rai, Muhammad Ali Jinnah and others had fully acknowledged the multicommunal character of the Indian polity and therefore believed in the Hindu-Muslim unity as a perquisite of any political advance in India. This realisation had led to the conclusion of the Lucknow Pact in 1916 which became possible because all the liberal leaders of both parties were behind it.
