Gandhi view on Basic Education in India

Gandhi has attempted to explore a system of education which is called basic education. This system ofeducation is in conformity with his philosophy of life and values. He does not view education in thesense of formal literacy. Literacy, he holds, is not the end or even the beginning of education. It is onlyone of the means whereby a man or woman can be educated. He takes education in a broadperspective and brings forth its two basic objectives, acquisition of knowledge and a sense of freedom.Knowledge begins with questioning or healthy inquisitiveness. This is the prerequisite for any kind oflearning. Further inquisitiveness should be associated with a sense of humility and not with anyimprudence knowledge which includes training of some kind acquired with inquisitiveness and humility isnecessary for service of the society or humanity at large.
