The government of Karnataka has taken several significant measures to build the capacity of women representatives in Local Governments by promoting gender training, leadership development, and empowerment initiatives. Since the implementation of the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments, women’s participation in Panchayati Raj Institutions and urban local bodies has increased considerably. However, effective participation requires more than political representation; it demands knowledge, skills, confidence, and decision-making abilities. Karnataka has therefore focused on strengthening the capacities of elected women representatives through various programmes and institutional mechanisms.
