Self-Help Groups (SHGs) are small, voluntary associations of people, generally belonging to similar socio-economic backgrounds, who come together to address their common problems through mutual help and collective action. In the context of agricultural development, SHGs play a crucial role in mobilizing rural poor, especially small and marginal farmers, landless laborers, and rural women, to improve their economic and social conditions. An SHG usually consists of 10 to 20 members who regularly save small amounts of money, create a common fund, and use this fund to provide loans to members for productive and emergency needs. The concept is based on the principles of self-reliance, mutual trust, democratic functioning, and collective decision-making. The basic idea behind SHGs is that even poor individuals have the capacity to save and manage financial resources when they act collectively. Individually, rural households often lack access to formal credit due to lack of collateral, low income, and limited financial literacy.
