Agricultural and rural development cooperatives are voluntary, member-owned and democratically controlled organizations formed to meet the common economic, social and cultural needs of farmers and rural communities. They represent a crucial form of institutional support for agricultural development by mobilizing local resources, enhancing bargaining power, improving access to inputs and markets, and promoting inclusive growth. In agrarian economies, where small and marginal farmers dominate, cooperatives serve as instruments of collective action to overcome market imperfections, reduce transaction costs and strengthen rural livelihoods. One of the most prominent forms is agricultural credit cooperatives. Marketing cooperatives constitute another vital form. These organizations help farmers collectively market their produce, thereby improving price realization and reducing exploitation by intermediaries. By pooling produce, they enhance bargaining power and facilitate access to distant and more remunerative markets.
