Scientific research is a systematic, logical, objective, and organized process of acquiring new knowledge and verifying existing knowledge through careful observation, collection of evidence, analysis, and interpretation. In anthropology, scientific research is used to understand human beings, their biological characteristics, social relationships, cultural practices, institutions, behaviour, and processes of change. Anthropology studies human life in both its biological and cultural dimensions, and therefore scientific research provides a disciplined method for examining the diversity and complexity of human societies. Scientific research differs from ordinary knowledge because it is based on systematic procedures, evidence, logical reasoning, and methods that allow findings to be examined and, where appropriate, verified by other researchers. The concept of scientific research is closely associated with the scientific method. The scientific method involves identifying a problem, reviewing existing knowledge, formulating research questions or hypotheses, collecting relevant data, analysing the data, interpreting the findings, and developing explanations based on evidence. Scientific research does not depend merely on personal opinions, assumptions, traditions, or beliefs. Instead, it attempts to establish relationships and explanations through systematically obtained evidence. In anthropology, for example, if a researcher wants to study changes in family structure in a tribal community, the researcher cannot simply depend on general assumptions. The researcher must define the research problem, select an appropriate population, collect information through observation, interviews, schedules, genealogies, or other techniques, analyse the information, and interpret the findings within their social and cultural context. Scientific research has several important characteristics. First, it is systematic. Research follows an organized sequence of activities rather than an unplanned collection of information.
