Interactivity in the process of teaching and learning refers to the active engagement between the learner and the instructional material, teacher, or learning environment. It emphasizes participation, response, feedback, and continuous involvement of the learner in the learning process. In traditional classroom settings, interactivity occurs through discussions, questioning, group activities, and direct communication between teacher and students. In distance education and self-learning contexts, however, learners study independently without immediate face-to-face guidance. Therefore, learning materials must be designed in such a way that they simulate interaction and guide the learner through the learning process. Interactivity in teaching and learning essentially means that the learner does not remain a passive receiver of information but becomes an active participant who thinks, responds, reflects, and applies knowledge. The concept of interactivity is closely linked with the learner-centered approach to education. Instead of simply presenting information, interactive learning materials encourage the learner to ask questions, perform activities, solve problems, and evaluate their own understanding. This process creates a dialogue between the learner and the material. The material anticipates possible questions, provides explanations, asks learners to perform tasks, and offers feedback. Thus, the learner feels as if they are being guided by a teacher even in the absence of direct instruction. In the design and development of Self Learning Materials (SLMs), interactivity is a fundamental principle. Self-learning materials are specially prepared instructional texts that enable learners to study independently at their own pace. Since learners do not have regular classroom interaction, the printed material must take on the role of a teacher. It should communicate with the learner in a conversational style, guide them step by step, and encourage them to participate actively in the learning process.
