Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressive respiratory disorder characterized by persistent airflow limitation due to chronic inflammation of the airways and lung parenchyma. It includes conditions such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema, often caused by long-term exposure to irritants like cigarette smoke, pollution, and occupational hazards.  

### Pathophysiology  
COPD develops due to chronic exposure to noxious particles or gases, leading to inflammation of the airways, lung parenchyma, and pulmonary vasculature. This inflammation triggers increased mucus production, destruction of alveolar walls, and fibrosis, causing narrowing of airways.  

- Chronic Bronchitis: Repeated irritation of the bronchial tubes results in excessive mucus secretion, airway obstruction, and chronic cough. Goblet cell hyperplasia and ciliary dysfunction impair mucus clearance, increasing the risk of infections.
