The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), established in 2000 following the United Nations Millennium Summit, represented a global partnership to address key challenges in human development, poverty reduction, health improvement, and environmental sustainability by the target year 2015. Among the eight MDGs, several were directly related to health, while others indirectly contributed to health outcomes through social and economic improvements. In the context of public health and HIV/AIDS, the MDGs provided a clear framework for mobilizing resources, aligning policies, and implementing programs aimed at improving health indicators, controlling communicable diseases, and addressing inequalities in access to healthcare services. The health-related MDGs can be grouped under three major goals that were explicitly health-focused and a few others that indirectly impacted public health. These health-related goals are as follows: Goal 4: Reduce Child Mortality This goal was aimed at significantly lowering the mortality rate among children under five years of age. The specific target under this goal was to reduce by two-thirds the under-five mortality rate between 1990 and 2015. Key indicators included: 1. Under-five mortality rate (U5MR) – the probability that a newborn baby will die before reaching age five, expressed per 1,000 live births. 2. Infant mortality rate (IMR) – the probability that a child will die before reaching one year of age, expressed per 1,000 live births. 3. Proportion of one-year-old children immunized against measles – an indicator of vaccination coverage, which serves as a proxy for access to and quality of primary healthcare. The significance of this goal in public health lay in addressing preventable causes of child deaths such as pneumonia, diarrhoea, malaria, malnutrition, and vaccine-preventable diseases. Immunization programs, improvements in maternal health, access to clean water and sanitation, and better nutrition were critical interventions. In relation to HIV/AIDS, preventing mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV was an essential component, as paediatric HIV contributed to child mortality in many countries with high HIV prevalence.
