# Status of Women Employed in the Organised and Unorganised Sectors of the Indian Economy Women constitute an important part of India’s labour force and contribute significantly to agriculture, manufacturing, services, trade, household enterprises and professional occupations. However, their position in the Indian economy is marked by considerable inequalities in access to employment, wages, job security, social protection and opportunities for advancement. The distinction between the organised and unorganised sectors is particularly important for understanding the economic status of Indian women. While women in the organised sector generally enjoy greater legal protection and better working conditions, the majority of working women are concentrated in informal and unorganised activities where employment is often insecure and poorly remunerated. The organised sector consists of establishments that are registered and regulated by the government and generally provide relatively structured employment conditions. It includes government departments, public sector undertakings, banks, schools, hospitals, large factories, corporate enterprises and other registered organisations. Women employed in this sector are found as teachers, doctors, nurses, engineers, administrators, bank employees, civil servants, managers, researchers, lawyers, IT professionals and factory workers. Their participation has expanded considerably with the spread of education, urbanisation, professional training and the growth of the service sector.
