Liberalisation, Privatisation, and Globalization (LPG) refer to the series of economic reforms introduced in India in 1991 to transition the country towards a more market-oriented economy. These policies aimed at addressing the economic crisis and fostering growth, efficiency, and global integration. Each of the three components—liberalisation, privatisation, and globalization—has had a profound impact on India’s development trajectory, shaping its economic structure, industrial sector, and position in the global economy.

### Liberalisation

Liberalisation refers to the process of reducing government controls over the economy. Before 1991, India followed a largely closed, protectionist economic model characterized by extensive state regulation and intervention. The economy was heavily regulated through the License Raj, where industries needed government licenses to start, expand, or even change their product lines. The focus was on self-reliance, and imports were restricted, with tariffs and quotas set high to protect domestic industries. 

The liberalisation process aimed to dismantle these restrictive controls and introduce market-driven reforms. The first and foremost step was the reduction of tariffs and import duties, which encouraged the entry of foreign goods and companies into the Indian market. This led to the breaking down of monopolies and enhanced competition within domestic industries, resulting in the improvement of product quality and consumer choice.

In addition to trade liberalisation, the Indian government moved towards the de-regulation of industries. The number of industries reserved for public sector undertakings was reduced, and more sectors were opened to private enterprises. The policy of liberalisation also involved the relaxation of foreign exchange regulations, which allowed Indian businesses greater access to foreign capital and technology.
