A self-life study based on different facial emotions and anatomical gestures is an important exercise in creative portraiture because it combines observation, drawing skill, anatomical understanding, and emotional expression. The purpose of this artwork is not simply to reproduce the physical appearance of a face but to understand how changes in emotion affect the structure, proportion, muscles, posture, and overall character of the human figure. In Creative Portraiture, the artist studies the relationship between the external appearance of a person and the internal emotion expressed through the face and body. A successful self-life study therefore requires careful observation of oneself and the ability to translate subtle changes in expression into charcoal or graphite. For Artwork–02, the study can be executed on a Full Imperial paper using either charcoal or graphite pencil. The large format provides sufficient space to develop several facial expressions and anatomical gestures while maintaining clarity and detail. The artist may arrange a series of self-portraits showing emotions such as happiness, sadness, anger, fear, surprise, disgust, calmness, and contemplation. Each expression should be observed directly through a mirror or through carefully selected photographic references. The objective is to capture the distinctive structural changes produced by each emotion rather than merely drawing a conventional attractive portrait. The first stage of the study is observation. Before beginning the drawing, the artist should examine the proportions and basic structure of the face. Important landmarks include the top of the skull, hairline, eyebrows, eyes, nose, mouth, chin, jawline, and ears. The approximate relationship between these features should be carefully observed.
