Winds are horizontal movements of air caused by differences in atmospheric pressure resulting from unequal heating of the Earth's surface. They play a vital role in regulating weather, climate, temperature, and precipitation. On the basis of their duration and regularity, winds are broadly classified into prevailing winds and seasonal winds. Though both influence climatic conditions, they differ significantly in their origin, direction, duration, geographical extent, and climatic effects. Prevailing winds are the permanent or planetary winds that blow throughout the year in a fairly constant direction over large regions of the Earth. They are generated due to the global pressure belts and the Earth's rotation, which gives rise to the Coriolis force. These winds include the Trade Winds, Westerlies, and Polar Easterlies. Their direction remains relatively stable, although minor seasonal shifts may occur because of the northward and southward migration of pressure belts.
