Evaluation of a research report is a systematic and critical process to judge the quality, rigor, relevance, and usefulness of the study. One of the foremost criteria is the clarity of the research problem. A good research report clearly states the problem, justifies its importance, and situates it within the field of distance education. For example, a study examining learner retention in online programmes should clearly specify whether the problem relates to instructional design, learner support services, or technological access, rather than presenting a vague concern about “dropout rates.” Another important criterion is the relevance and adequacy of the review of related literature. The literature review should demonstrate the researcher’s understanding of national and international studies, theoretical frameworks, and current debates in distance education. It should critically synthesize earlier research rather than merely listing studies. For instance, a research report on the effectiveness of MOOCs should review global studies on MOOCs, highlight methodological limitations, and identify gaps that the present study intends to address. An outdated or poorly organized review weakens the credibility of the research. The appropriateness of research objectives or research questions is also a key criterion. Objectives must be specific, measurable, and aligned with the research problem. In distance education research, objectives should reflect the unique nature of open learning systems, such as flexibility, learner autonomy, and use of ICT.
