For example, a study examining learner retention in online programmes should clearly specify whether the problem relates to instructional design, learner support services, or technological access, rather than presenting a vague concern about “dropout rates.” Another important criterion is the relevance and adequacy of the review of related literature. The literature review should demonstrate the researcher’s understanding of national and international studies, theoretical frameworks, and current debates in distance education. It should critically synthesize earlier research rather than merely listing studies. For instance, a research report on the effectiveness of MOOCs should review global studies on MOOCs, highlight methodological limitations, and identify gaps that the present study intends to address.
